King Alfred's foliage colour is a perfect contrast with the colour of hard surfaces.

Dianella caerulea 'John 316'

Dimensions: 500 - 600mm tall x 500mm wide. Kind Alfred is more of a clumping plant than a traditional rhizomatous Dianella. It has strong upright to slightly arching bluish/green foliage.

Flowers: Spring & Summer. Purple star shape held amongst the foliage, followed by purple berries.

Aspect: King Alfred grows in full sun through to 70% shade. Testing shows that it will handle cold to -10c and medium frost levels. Best suited to protected coastal aspects. King Alfred has exceptional soil binding abilities which makes it ideal for erosion control on batters and dry swales.

Soil Types: Sandy loam, clay loam and heavy clay soils. King Alfred will be a good plant for heavy clay soils, more so than the traditional Dianella.

Mulch Type: No perceived problems with any well composted, processed mulch type.

Maintenance Level 2: Trim back foliage to 100mm above the ground every 2 to 3 years in spring to remove old foliage. Fertilize with slow release fertilizer annually and after trimming.
