'Little Jess' has been the stand out variety of all Dianella, with its strong green, compact foliage. Its versatility in applications from roadside to commercial and domestic gardens, from full sun to almost complete shade have made it a universal go anywhere plant. It has excellent drought tolerance and an ability to recover from damage with new shoots from its rhizomes. |
Dianella caerulea 'DCMP01' Dimensions: 300-400mm* tall x 400-500mm wide. (* in areas of high rainfall and rich volcanic soils it may grow 600mm in height.) Little Jess has short spreading rhizomes which give it the ability to fill in gaps, providing a total ground cover. Flowers: Spring & Summer. Purple star shaped, held well above the foliage, followed by purple berries. Aspect: Little Jess will grow in complete full sun and also 90% full shade. It is also suited to exposed seaside planting and coastal humidity. It grows well inland where it can handle frost from -2c to -3c with minor leaf burn, which is replaced by new growth in spring from the underground rhizomes. Soil Types: Sandy loam, clay loan, light clay. Mulch Types: Little Jess has no problems with any well composted, processed mulch type. Maintenance Level 3: Trim back foliage to 100mm above the ground every 4 or 5 years, to remove old foliage. Fertilize with slow release fertilizer after trimming to encourage fresh re-growth.
